The BIOPAN components technology enables the adaptation of the scale and form of development depending on the urban context. The core components that, through their multiplication, shape the scale and form of the building are: single apartments, double apartments, and vertical circulation cores equipped with one or two emergency staircases and a lift.
In the construction of senior housing facilities, we maximise the use of natural and recycled materials that significantly reduce the carbon footprint associated with the construction process. The main structural system and the 2D prefabricated components are made of timber — a renewable material with a negative carbon footprint. The use of natural lignocellulosic and cellulose-based materials also positively influences the indoor microclimate, particularly in terms of temperature and humidity regulation.
The building services systems in the senior housing facilities include power supply from photovoltaic installations located on the roof and above parking spaces, electric underfloor heating, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, greywater and rainwater recovery systems for toilet flushing, as well as an advanced building management system.
RESEARCH AREAS:
- we develop age-inclusive, sustainable & evidence-based housing models
- we validate modular housing units combining physical and VR tools
- we employ participatory co design methods to foster community engagement
